Applying for Wohngeld — Step-by-Step Guide
Applying for Wohngeld follows a clear process. This step-by-step guide helps you stay organised and avoid the most common mistakes. Allow enough time for preparation and completion — a complete application significantly speeds up processing.
Step 1: Check Eligibility
Before submitting, check whether you meet the basic requirements. Ask yourself:
- Is my income below the income limit for my household size?
- Does my rent not exceed the maximum amount (Rent Level IV in Düsseldorf)?
- Am I already receiving Bürgergeld or basic income support? (Then there is no Wohngeld entitlement)
- Am I a student with BAföG entitlement? (Then I am generally excluded)
→ Check all eligibility requirements in detail
Step 2: Gather Required Documents
Collect all required proofs and documents. A complete overview can be found in our document checklist. The most important categories:
- Identity: Identity card or passport with registration certificate
- Income: Payslips for the last 12 months, pension statements, proof of other income
- Rent: Tenancy agreement, proof of rent payments for the last three months, landlord certificate
- Special circumstances: Severely disabled person's pass, maintenance rulings, proof of childcare costs
Step 3: Complete the Application Form
The Wohngeld application form spans several pages. Take your time and fill it in carefully. Here are the most important sections:
- Personal details: Name, address, date of birth, nationality, marital status
- Household details: All persons living with you in the flat — with name, date of birth and relationship
- Flat details: Address, type of dwelling (rented or owned), move-in date
- Rent details: Rent amount (net cold rent, service charges, heating costs), name and address of landlord
- Income details: Detailed breakdown of all income for the last 12 months for each household member
- Details of other benefits: Whether you receive Bürgergeld, basic income support, BAföG or other social benefits
- Bank details: For Wohngeld payments
Step 4: Obtain Landlord Certificate
The landlord certificate is a mandatory document. Your landlord must confirm:
- The exact rent amount (net cold rent, service charges, heating costs)
- The floor area of the flat
- The number of rooms
- Whether the flat is publicly subsidised
Ask your landlord for the certificate early — processing may take a few days.
Step 5: Submit Application
You have three options:
- Online: Via the digital application portal — documents can be uploaded as a scan or photo.
- By post: Send the completed application with all documents to the Wohngeld office. Address: Wohngeldstelle Düsseldorf, Brinckmannstraße 5, 40225 Düsseldorf
- In person: Hand in the application directly at the Wohngeld office. Bring originals and copies.
Step 6: Keep Copies
Make copies of your completed application and all submitted documents for your own records. In case of queries or discrepancies, you will have all proofs to hand.
Step 7: Wait for the Decision
After submission, your application will be processed by the Wohngeld office. You will receive a written decision — either an approval with the Wohngeld amount and approval period, or a rejection with reasons. If rejected, you have the option to appeal.
→ What happens after submitting the application
Attention: Wohngeld is paid from the month of application — not retroactively. The earlier you submit, the earlier your entitlement begins. Do not delay.
