After Your Wohngeld Application — What Happens Now?
You have submitted your Wohngeld application — what now? Here you can find out what happens next, how long processing takes and what you can do if the decision is not as expected.
Processing Your Application
After receiving your application, the Wohngeld office checks your documents for completeness and accuracy. Processing includes several steps:
- Initial check: Are all forms completely filled in and signed? Are all required documents attached?
- Income determination: The Wohngeld-relevant income of all household members is calculated from the submitted proofs — including all allowances and deductions.
- Rent check: The eligible rent is determined based on the tenancy agreement, landlord certificate and Rent Level IV for Düsseldorf.
- Wohngeld calculation: Based on income, rent and household size, the Wohngeld is calculated according to the statutory formula.
- Decision issuance: You will receive a written decision with the result of the review.
How Long Does Processing Take?
Processing time depends on various factors — particularly the completeness of your application and the current workload of the Wohngeld office. For complete applications, processing can take several weeks. Incomplete applications, missing documents or a high volume of applications can extend processing.
Important: Wohngeld is paid from the month of application — even if the decision is issued later. You will then receive a back payment for the months since application. However, this only applies if you submitted all documents completely and on time.
The Approval Notice
If your application is granted, you will receive an approval notice. This contains:
- The monthly Wohngeld amount
- The approval period (usually 15 months)
- The reference number for future correspondence
- The information on legal remedies (option to appeal)
- Notes on reporting obligations for changes in your circumstances
Keep this notice safe. You will need it for renewals, changes and queries.
The Rejection Notice
If your application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with reasons. Common reasons for rejection are:
- Your income exceeds the income limit
- You receive priority benefits (Bürgergeld, basic income support)
- As a student, you are excluded from Wohngeld by BAföG
- The calculated Wohngeld amount is less than €10 per month
Filing an Appeal
If you disagree with the decision, you can file an appeal (Widerspruch) within one month of receipt. The appeal must be submitted in writing to the Wohngeld office. State the reasons for your appeal and attach any additional supporting documents that support your position.
If the appeal is also rejected, you will receive an appeal decision. You can then file a lawsuit with the social court. Social court proceedings are generally free of court costs.
Wohngeld Payment
The approved Wohngeld is transferred monthly at the end of the month to the account you specified. The first payment usually includes all months since application (back payment). From then on, payments are made regularly each month until the end of the approval period.
