Wohngeld Increase 2026 — What's Changing?

A comprehensive Wohngeld increase came into effect on January 1, 2026. The reform brings noticeable improvements: higher Wohngeld amounts, raised income limits and more households becoming eligible for Wohngeld for the first time. This is particularly good news for Düsseldorf with its high rent level.

Key message: Due to the 2026 Wohngeld increase, approximately 30% more households now receive Wohngeld than before. The average increase in Wohngeld is about €30–40 per month — in some cases significantly more.

The Most Important Changes at a Glance

1. Higher Wohngeld Amounts

Wohngeld amounts have been raised by an average of about 15 percent. For a 2-person household in Düsseldorf (Rent Level IV) with an income of €1,300 per month, Wohngeld rises, for example, from around €295 to approximately €340 — an increase of €45 per month or €540 per year.

2. Raised Income Limits

The income limits for Wohngeld receipt have been increased. This means that more households with medium incomes are now entitled to Wohngeld. A 1-person household in Düsseldorf can now receive Wohngeld with an income up to around €1,400 — before the increase, the limit was approximately €1,250.

3. Increased Maximum Rent Amounts

The maximum rent amounts taken into account in the calculation have been increased across all rent levels. In Düsseldorf (Rent Level IV), the maximum amount for a 1-person household rose from around €426 to now €456. For families with several children, the increase is correspondingly larger.

4. Permanent Climate Component

An important innovation: the climate component in Wohngeld has been made permanent. It takes into account higher housing costs that may arise from energy-efficient renovations. Households in energy-renovated flats receive a supplement to Wohngeld as a result — this applies regardless of individual heating cost statements.

5. Simplified Application Process

The application process has been digitalised and simplified. Many proofs can now be submitted digitally, and the approval period has been extended to 15 months (previously 12 months). This means less administrative effort for applicants.

Who Benefits Particularly?

  • Families with children: Due to the combination of higher income limits and higher rent amounts, families benefit particularly strongly
  • Pensioners with a small pension: Many pensioners whose pension was previously just above the income limit are now entitled for the first time
  • Single persons in expensive flats: Due to the increased maximum rent amounts, single persons in Düsseldorf with rents over €400 also benefit
  • Low earners: Those who work but earn little now receive noticeably more Wohngeld

Do I Need to Submit a New Application?

Yes, if you have not previously received Wohngeld. If you previously did not receive Wohngeld due to the lower income limits and could now be eligible due to the increase, you should submit a new application.

Partially, if you are already receiving Wohngeld. For ongoing approvals, Wohngeld is generally automatically adjusted at the next approval period. A separate application is not required. If in doubt, check with the Wohngeld office.
